North Shore Schools

Our Vision: North Shore schools lead the country for adoption of online education services and applications.

Our schools are currently under served by Broadband, which presents a major barrier to the adoption of innovative learning and educational tools. The new vision for education is based on a world where information and communications systems are fast, reliable affordable, and in today's terms - this means fibre to schools with gigabit speed access; NEAL. Gigabit broadband will change the learning experience for students, exposing them to new stimulating and innovative learning environments that were previously not feasible or not practical in the narrowband environment.

Affordability – Internet and access connection costs for schools are high and remove the ability of schools to purchase the high speed access and large Internet download capacity they require. NEAL allows schools to gain low cost, high speed access and enables schools to group together to further achieve economies of scale.

Speed – Gigabit access will revolutionize the learning tools at a schools disposal. Currently, schools struggle with delivering content to the classroom.

Connectivity - Delivering affordable connections allows schools to collaborate online with each other, the North Shore City Council and other New Zealand and internationally connected learning groups.

There are a number of ways NEAL can benefit North Shore schools:

  • Ability to share information and collaborate between schools.
  • Access to external service providers (exercise collective buying power) to gain additional services and applications (e.g. VoIP, off-site data storage and centralised infrastructure resources and IT expertise).
  • Access to extended education content (e.g. learning/course management and student management, expert online knowledge groups and extranets).
  • Engagement in real-time, virtual and authentic sources to present new learning opportunities.
  • Interactive teaching (shared whiteboards, online conferences, video conferencing).
  • High speed, low cost networking.
